Davy Jones for President!

When I was a little girl, I wanted to marry Davy Jones of the Monkees. He seemed nice, had good hair and wasn’t too much taller than me. I had yet to reach the double digits. Never mind that I was thinking about marriage at such a young age or that I ended up being a bit of a hold-out on the whole thing, I was a contemplater then and continue to be so now.

As I grew up, my criteria for husband became more refined. Though it admittedly took some time, I realized that I actually did want to find a partner and there were a few things that were non-negotiable. He had to be: kind, fair-minded, willing and able to love, and believe in a higher power. He also had to exercise wisdom, have street smarts, a job, and self-control.

The list grew as I did but I think you get the picture. Partners are members of our family. In my opinion, both partners have to be interested in how each other feels and the sharing of some basic core-beliefs is key as well. It’s perfectly fine to differ on some issues as long as there is plenty of respect in the mix.During a recent conversation with my children about the current political arena, I had a flash of Davy Jones rush across the screen in my head. It occurred to me that our politicians have a role in our lives much like family and I thought, who would I trust to be in my home, handle my finances, impact my children’s education and represent me and my family to others at home and abroad? These are just a few of the questions but no matter, when I looked at who was running for president, I felt both hopeful and despondent.

Change is good and introducing new ideas is wonderful. Looking at things from a different perspective is also valuable and enlightening. Interestingly, over and over again I keep coming back to that finding the happy medium piece. In other words, I continue to return to the need for balance. To find it and live there.

Though I have a preference there seems not to be a perfect choice and I can live with that. What I am struggling with is the role model piece and the future of my children.

Self-control and actions based on wisdom instead of fear is a big deal in my home what with all the hormones, drive-by intuitive insights and dirty socks flying around the place.

What has helped me feel balanced is remembering my values, the children on this planet and my soul.

Thinking this way reduces my fear so I can act of my own wisdom.

I’m so grateful that we have choices in the United States and that we can openly disagree and discuss. Davy Jones is not an option for president, what with his being dead and all, but we do have options.

I believe in the wisdom of the soul and exercise it in all things.

May the wisdom in all of us prevail.
