“Trust in dreams, for in them is the hidden gate to eternity.” Kahlil Gibran
When I set out to write this blog, my intent was to help people build their own inventory or store of intuitive-related tools through a few simple dream practices I’ve been using for a number of years. Dreams can help us access vital information, they can help us increase our self-awareness and are often incredibly healing. When emotional healing takes place, our intuitive capacity grows. Precognitive dreams for instance, provide a sort of heads up of what is to come much like a ‘save the date’ for emotions. When we are open to the insight our dreams can lend, a world of support is accessible.
Dream symbols have been around for thousands of years. Joseph interpreted Pharaoh’s dreams (Genesis) and the late Carl Y Jung’s dream analysis work helped us learn to interpret our own. As the world evolves, dream interpretation does as well. It’s relevant to remember that symbols in dreams do not always mean the same thing for everyone. The best person to analyze the true meaning of a dream is the dreamer!
For example, death in a dream can symbolize something significant ending and new beginnings instead of an actual death and pregnancy in a dream often symbolizes giving birth to big change or a new self. Birds in dreams commonly represent transcendence, release and creativity. Nevertheless, bird and animal symbolism is usually based on the one characteristic of the bird or animal that stands out most for the dreamer. The key is always the dreamer!
If, for instance, you just celebrated your 63rd birthday and recently have had dreams that you are pregnant no need to go out and purchase prenatal vitamins just yet. Your higher self may be conveying that some aspect of yourself is about to bud or that your creative senses are developing and emerging.
Our higher self recurrently delivers precognitive dreams prior to life-altering events. Our higher self is our ego-less self, or rather our real self, and our divine spiritual essence.
The dream our higher self sends may be forgotten until the situation actually transpires. In other words, the higher part of ourselves sends messages to our future selves in an effort to help prepare us for future events. I am referring to occasions such as life-cycle events such as the birth of a child or death of a loved one.
Interpreting old dreams can be curiously enlightening because we have more information about what actually occurred following the dream. During the process
of writing this blog, I had an opportunity to interpret one of my own old dreams.
As I mentioned, I wanted to find a technique to include in this blog so I looked for and found some old journals. The first thing I read was a personal nighttime affirmation I had written in my early thirties that always helped lift my spirits before I closed my eyes to sleep. It wasn’t written to share so beware, it rhymes. It’s included at the end of this blog.
The dream in my journal that caught my eye was dated December 27th, 2008 and was about my dad and had something do with water. As Carl Jung said, “Water is the commonest symbol for the unconscious.” There are numerous meanings behind water as a symbol in dreams. In my own experience, water in a dream denotes something of a spiritual nature, meaning spiritual growth or decline.
Here is the excerpt from my journal.
I went to see my father at his sister’s home near Fargo, North Dakota. My father was somehow helping me to prepare for my water test. I had been preparing for this test for a very long time and though I was nervous, I knew I would pass. My dad was wearing yellow pajamas and not feeling well at all. When I went to see him again, right before my test, he was dressed in a nice brown suit. He looked dapper and healthy. I asked him what was up and where he was going. He said he had to go now; it was time for him to go. I said, (with much fear) but you were supposed to be here for my test dad! He looked at me with sad, apologetic eyes and said it was time for him to go, he had to go.
This dream was sent to me as an intuitive heads up but I didn’t remember anything about it until tonight.
My dream, my Interpretation.…My dad would never have worn pajamas while entertaining guests, even family members. He disliked the color brown and almost never wore it yet he was wearing it in this dream. What struck me so deeply is that my dad died shortly before The Happy Medium hit the stores in 2009. I had been preparing my whole life to step up to the plate and out of the psychic closet. I knew I would experience a variety of responses from strangers, friends and family about being a medium and though I was a little nervous, I was prepared. My father had always adored me and applauded my unique sparkle. He meant the world to me. It didn’t much matter that he and I disagreed on matters of spirit and politics. He believed in me. Naturally I wanted his support during my ‘test’. As it turns out, his dying was part of my test as was the launch of The Happy Medium.
So what can we learn from all of this?
If you have a dream of importance and you don’t recall it right away, know that when and if you do, it has already done its job for you. You don’t have to be an expert at interpreting your dreams. Just record them, explore them, and allow their meaning to unfold. Open your mind before you fall asleep. See what is uncovered while you are asleep and under the covers!
If you would like to increase the chances of remembering and interpreting your own dreams, here are a few simple recommendations.
A few things to help the dreamer…
1-Do your best to go to bed at the same time each night.
2-Read something uplifting before going to sleep.
3-Keep a pad of paper and pen next to your bed at night.
4-When you first wake up, wait to get out of bed. Write down what you remember about your dreams, even if it’s only a color or a feeling.
5-Record your memory of your dreams instead of writing them down if it is easier for you.
6-No words come to mind…then draw a picture of your dream!
7-No judging please!
8-Include the date and time.
9-Were you in the dream or were you an observer…or both?
10-Every detail in our dreams has meaning, relax and allow the meaning to unfold.
Dream Affirmation
A dream afloat amidst the wings of sleep
The Universe’s way to lay inner knowledge at my feet.
I stand my conscious levels aside and open the door usually guarded by my ego, wide.
Oh lay sweet knowledge at my feet. Allow my soul to gather inner wisdom oh so sweet.
